There are 26 letters, but, with upper and lowercase letters, there are really 52 letters. That’s a lot to learn, but kids need to be able to identify letters by their names before they can start adding letter sounds to the mix. It’s a complicated but super important part of pre-literacy skills, so break out the letter magnets for the fridge pronto.
Children who can’t put letter names and sounds together have more difficulty learning to read. If you’re thinking now is the time for flashcards and worksheets, please stop yourself. There are plenty of more fun and exciting ways to help your child match up letters and their names. This month is all about letter recognition ☺
