Alaska is a diverse state with a rich indigenous history, and home to people of many races. It’s important that we not shy away from conversations about racism.
If the protests following the death of George Floyd proved anything, it showed that it is never too early to speak with children about racism. It’s heartbreaking and tough to admit to children that the world can be unjust, uncivil, and uncaring. However, all voices are needed to make our country a place where everyone has the same rights.
Thankfully, there are caring adult of all races who are readier and more willing than ever take on this challenge. Like so many other topics, there are books that openly discuss race through representation and by celebrating differences, including many books that are appropriate for younger children. And we’re here to help you because these are long overdue conversations for most of us.
